Q: What inspired you to create VoiceGift® and pioneer the concept of VoiceGifting®?
I’m not a big note-writer but I love to talk, so using my voice to express the thoughts behind a gift… even if it’s just saying “Hi” was compelling.
Q: How do you see the role of the human voice in enhancing personal gifts and memories?
Voice is the most powerful trigger for emotions and memories, and at the end of the day, that’s what gifting is all about. Your voice will never replace the gift but in most cases it will outlive the gift and preserve the memory of the moment.

Q: What is unique about VoiceGift products compared to traditional gift tags or boxes?
Gift wrapping tells the recipient that this is more than a transaction, more than the mere exchange of an item, but as a result it can also be labor intensive and inconvenient. The beauty (and irony) of voicegifting is that it is the MOST personal way to customize your gift… but also as easy as saying Hi, I love you!
Q: What special occasions do you think are best suited for VoiceGift products?
The coolest occasion is no occasion at all… just because! Sometimes you just randomly think of someone or remember a shared joke and voicegifting lets you make any day a special day. The best thing I like about voicegifting is that it provides a vicarious thrill for the gifter. I always smile (or tear up) when I imagine my loved one or friend hearing the VoiceGift for the first time…
Q: What future product innovations or expansions can VoiceGift customers look forward to?
We’re working on a way to enable any retailer to offer voicegifting like they currently offer gift wrapping!

Q: Turning 70 is a significant milestone—how has your perspective on life and work evolved as you’ve reached this milestone?
I have always gotten equal satisfaction from knowing that VoiceGift products were helping users communicate as I did with the cha-ching of the cash register… but as I get older the thrill of being a part of memory making and sentiment expression has grown stronger.
Q: What are some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learned throughout your career and entrepreneurial journey?
You have to be there… Getting product to market and into the hands of customers is the most satisfying but also educational experience for any entrepreneur…. And you never know who will discover you and what direction you will take.
Q: Looking back, is there a defining moment or decision that shaped the trajectory of your life and business?
One of the people who stumbled upon my early talking teddy was the founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop and when she asked if she could only buy the voice recorder (and not the plush) I realized that I was in the communication business and should focus on voice-enhancing life rather than products per se.

Q: How do you maintain creativity and passion for VoiceGift after all these years?
I like to think that I follow Steve Jobs’ advice to stay hungry, but more so to stay silly.
Q: What role has family or personal relationships played in supporting your work and vision for VoiceGift?
At the end of the day, the biggest influence on my life in general and business life in particular was my dad who taught me to be fair, play fair, and only do business with people who were similarly inclined.
Q: What hobbies or activities outside of work bring you joy and help you stay inspired?
For a big chunk of my adolescence I was deeply involved in religion and the study of Judaism. God and spirituality do not play as large a role in my life today but I love the study of religion as a key aspect of culture and the human condition. I even have a weekly podcast. I feel fortunate to be able to continue something that I did in my youth as it makes me feel young whenever I do it. If I had surfed as a kid… my old knees might not share the joy!

Q: How do you stay connected with younger generations, and how has that influenced VoiceGift’s evolution?
I love to get down on the floor and play with my grandkids. Their parents give me no credit since they say: “Dad, you are a kid” and I guess they are right 🙂 Staying young and thinking young works well in business and life in general.
Q: As someone who has seen many changes over the decades, what advice would you give your younger self starting out today?
Get a job!
