PLAY AAC is a simple, screen-free communication tool that allows you to record words, phrases, questions, instructions, or other messages onto 12 easy-to-press buttons.
It can be customized for the individual using it, whether that means recording core words such as Help, More, Yes, No, Hungry, Break, and All Done, or more personal messages such as names, favorite foods, activities, or frequently used phrases.
Because recordings can be changed at any time, PLAY AAC can evolve as the user's communication needs and abilities change.
PLAY AAC has 12 individual recording buttons, and each button can hold its own word, phrase, instruction, message, or longer recording.
You decide what goes on each button and can change the recordings whenever you wish.
Absolutely. In fact, that's one of the features that makes PLAY AAC so personal.
Instead of relying on a synthesized or computer-generated voice, PLAY AAC lets you record your own voice—or the voice of a parent, sibling, teacher, caregiver, or even the person using the device.
A familiar voice can make everyday communication feel more natural and personal. You can record anything from a single word like “Help,” “More,” or “Hungry” to a complete phrase such as “I need a break” or “Can I have something to drink?”
And because recordings are so easy to change, the words—and the voices saying them—can evolve along with the person using PLAY AAC.
PLAY AAC has 128 megabytes of memory—that's approximately 2.5 hours of audio.
The audio does not have to be divided equally among the 12 buttons. One button might contain a single word such as “Help,” while another could contain a complete set of instructions or even a story. Each button can hold as much or as little audio as you wish, up to a combined total of approximately 2.5 hours.
Absolutely. In fact, that's one of the advantages of PLAY AAC.
You can record over any button whenever you want, making it easy to introduce new vocabulary, change routines, add longer phrases, or personalize the device for a new situation.
To replace a recording, slide the selector switch on the right side of PLAY AAC to REC, press the button you want to change, wait for the beep and blue light, and record the new message.
Please note: Recording over a button permanently deletes the previous recording, so back up any recordings you want to keep.
First, slide the selector switch on the right side of PLAY AAC to PLAY and press the button you intend to use. This lets you check whether anything is already recorded on that button.
Next, slide the selector switch to REC and press the button you want to record. Wait for the beep and for the blue light at the top of the device to turn on, then begin speaking.
When you're finished, press the button again momentarily to stop recording.
Slide the selector switch back to PLAY and press the button to hear your new recording.
You may want to make a short test recording first to determine the speaking distance and volume that sound best.
PLAY AAC includes materials that allow you to personalize the 12 buttons with visual labels corresponding to the words, phrases, people, activities, or needs you have recorded.
You can create custom labels using the PLAY AAC Label Maker, making it easy to change the visual vocabulary whenever you change the recordings.
This allows the device to be personalized for the individual using it rather than limiting you to a predetermined set of words or symbols.
We've included two sheets of UltraDuty® White Film sticker paper so you can print your own customized labels for the 12 PLAY AAC buttons.
Using our desktop PLAY AAC Label Maker, you can select and format pictograms or other images that are meaningful to the person using the device and print them at the correct size for the PLAY AAC buttons.
You can also use pictograms from resources such as ARASAAC, subject to their terms of use, to create personalized communication labels.
The extra sheet gives you plenty of room to experiment, create additional vocabulary, and print new labels as the user's communication needs change.

The Label Maker helps you format and print customized pictogram labels sized specifically for the 12 PLAY AAC buttons
The primary purpose of PLAY AAC is to help the user communicate, and for that purpose you'll generally want to use customized visual or pictogram labels directly on the buttons.
But the colorful matching stickers included with PLAY AAC can be useful for some of its other functions.
For example, you can place a sticker:
1. On a toothbrush or bathroom mirror to identify a button containing brushing instructions
2. Near a pill dispenser to identify a recorded reminder or set of instructions
3. On a lunchbox, coat hook, or other object as part of an audio routine
4. On the cover or page of a favorite book when PLAY AAC is being used for storytelling or interactive reading
Each sticker corresponds to the matching icon on one of the PLAY AAC buttons, helping the user know which button to press.
Yes. The adhesive is designed so the stickers can be removed and repositioned.
That makes it easy to move a sticker from one object, location, book, or activity to another as your needs change.
Yes. In addition to helping someone express a need or make a choice, PLAY AAC can be used to provide recorded prompts for everyday routines.
For example, buttons can contain messages such as:
“Time to brush your teeth.”
“Put on your coat.”
“Take your medicine.”
“Pack your backpack.”
The corresponding sticker can be placed on or near the object associated with that activity.
This gives the user an opportunity to access the prompt independently rather than relying on someone else to repeat the instruction.
Yes. Although communication is the primary focus of PLAY AAC, it retains all of the storytelling capabilities of the original PLAY for Kids.
You can record stories, repeated phrases, questions, character voices, or other audio and attach PLAY AAC to a book using the removable orange clip.
The matching stickers can also be placed on book covers or pages so the listener knows which button to press.
The orange clip is designed so that the device can be attached to the back of any hardcover book or album. It’s removable so you can keep it attached to a book, or just place device on a shelf nearby.
Of course. Simply enter the desired number and the II >> button to begin playing your audio — at any time during playback feel free to press the II >> button a second time to pause playback. To start playback from where you left off, just press the II >> button again.
Yes, and we recommend it for any recordings you would not want to lose.
Connect PLAY AAC to your computer using the USB charging cable. It will appear on your computer as an external drive, similar to a memory stick.
You can then copy the audio files to a folder on your computer for safekeeping. You can also use the saved files to transfer meaningful recordings to another PLAY device.
This can be especially useful when the recordings include the voice of a parent, family member, teacher, caregiver, or the person using PLAY AAC.
Yes, in between the REC and PLAY slide switch on the right side of the device is an OFF position. This is great for when you travel and pack your PLAY device or want to save battery.
PLAY AAC can provide approximately 2.5 to 5 hours of continuous playback, depending on the volume level.
At the highest volume, continuous playback is approximately 2.5 hours. At the lowest volume, it can be approximately 5 hours.
In normal AAC use, where individual words and phrases are played intermittently rather than continuously, actual time between charges may be considerably longer.
When the battery is depleted, it takes up to approximately one hour to fully recharge.
While PLAY AAC is charging, the light at the top of the device will flash red.
When charging is complete, the red light will stop flashing and turn off.

Once PLAY AAC is set up, there is:

Recordings are stored directly on the device.
The online PLAY AAC Label Maker is available when you want to create or change printed button labels, but it is not required for PLAY AAC to operate.
